2009 Cancer New Moon
1 Cancer 30

This month’s Cancer New Moon is the first of its kind in our lifetime. It’s the first New Moon to oppose Pluto since its entry into Capricorn. The opposition is tight, too, not merely in the same degree but within less than half a degree. As a result, there’s no sweet, cozy new beginning for us this month; this Moon is potent and unmistakable in impact. It launches an entirely new phase in our relationship to family, nurturing and the feminine.

We’ve been prepared for it. The role of the feminine has been undergoing empowerment all spring, as one celestial event after another has elevated her to even footing with the masculine. The ongoing event has been the twosome of Venus and Mars, who have been traveling in tandem for months, and who completed their latest embrace a day before the New Moon. What’s more, they are in a tight trine with Saturn, Pluto’s current ruler — about as tight as the New Moon’s opposition to Pluto, not merely in the same degree but within less than half of one. It’s definitely a time of merging, internally and with others, and of bringing the alignment of male and female directly into our mundane lives. This is not fleeting; it’s the way life is now and hereafter. The feminine is not enjoying a moment in the spotlight, only to retreat into obscurity and powerlessness. The New Moon’s opposition to Pluto is purifying and strengthening the power of the feminine, and of all the characteristics associated with Cancer.

For each of us personally this New Moon is a time of stripping away detritus in the Cancer-ruled areas of our charts. Family, food and nurturing issues come under the scalpel now, and so does one of the most highly charged archetypes in our society: the mother. Cancer is Mommy Central, where images run the gamut from the loving caretaker who kisses boo-boos and makes them better, to the source of after-school milk and cookies, to the martyr who serves everything with a side of guilt, to Mommy Dearest and worse. The stress from Pluto in this New Moon may summon some of her scarier guises, but if they do surface, it’s to purge imbalances and redeem the role of the mother. Societally, we have been terrified of her for centuries. This New Moon is a turning point in our perception and her role. The New Moon’s adjustment aspect to the North Node (where the collective is headed) and growth aspect to the South Node (where we’ve been) signals this as well.

Watch what happens in your relationship to your own mother, to your family and to the nurturing caretakers in your life. Whether your mother is alive or not, your relationship continues and will evolve now. Some people will discover the fierceness of their attachment to their bloodline; others will cut away diseased or unsupportive associations that have marched under the banner of family. Watch, too, what changes in how you engage in nurturing. If you have poured and sloshed it in all directions, including onto barren ground, the pattern will stop, as this New Moon begins a phase of streamlined and selective expression. With Saturn in Virgo ruling Pluto in Capricorn, the mandate is here to accept, honor and direct your nurturing impulses into healthy receptacles — and to extend them, first of all, to yourself.

In the light of this first-of-its-kind New Moon, you can begin to transform your relationship with food (by growing some, for starters), with your mother, with your children and, most of all, with the parenting that you have internalized into your being. It’s time to take responsibility for your own care and feeding. The weight of expectation you take off your family and close relationships will invite all concerned to step into their own power.

We have a lot of time to work with these concepts. This New Moon is the first of two Cancer New Moons this year. This one is at the very beginning of Cancer. The second, a month from now, is at the final degree of the sign. It’s also a solar eclipse, in an eclipse cycle that continues into the summer of 2010. We are lightening the emotional load for the long haul. This Moon cycle, and the coming eclipses, are transitioning us from one set of definitions for family, marriage and nurturing to another.

The Sabian Symbol for the Sun and the Moon at 2 Cancer is
A Man on a Magic Carpet Observes Vast Vistas Below.

Commentary: ‘A Man on a Magic Carpet Observes Vast Vistas Below’ is an image straight out of the “Arabian Nights” stories. King Solomon would tell the wind where he wanted to go, and the carpet rose in the air, landing him in the place he designated. In this Symbol, the ‘Magic Carpet’ can elevate the ‘Man’ above everything going on in his life, making it possible for him to escape problems and fly above and away from them. He is able to see what’s going on from a calm, possibly detached and rather creative state, with his imagination working strongly.

Oracle: Even though you may feel that there are many possibilities open to you, you may be unable to proceed with realistic, grounded plans, leaving you in a state of limbo. It’s important to make sure that you are not somehow disconnected from reality. It may be that some of the ‘Vast Vistas’ that are ‘Observed’ are really only fantasy, imagination or wishful thinking. There may be more inspiration in your mind’s eye than can be translated into reality. On the other hand, you are certainly in a state of heightened awareness and have a broad overview of the situation, which can give you an opportunity to plan for future action. Try to accept any positive opportunities that are offered, but allow your self time to put these opportunities into perspective. What is really possible now? There may be feelings of isolation. Perhaps you’re running away from the truth or feeling that you’re the only one who can truly see the whole picture. It is probably best not to rush into anything permanent now. This is something that you have to work through slowly and carefully. Remember the privilege of being given the opportunity of such an elevated view. Take some time, look around, but remember to come back to reality when it’s time!

Keywords: Elevated observations and heightened feelings. Having faith in the good things of life. Not wanting to see the ugly truth of reality. UFO’s and aliens. Escapism. Perspective and imagination. Out of body experiences. Dreams. Seeking transcendence. Astral projection. The dream of far destinations. Film and video.

The Caution: Feeling above everything and unaffected by situations. Losing touch with reality. Missing the point. Trying to avoid what’s going on. Peter Pan attitudes. Not feeling responsible for anything. Longing for something ‘Magic’ to happen. Bugging devices.

A field cannot well be seen from within the field. Ralph Waldo Emerson

Imagination is more important than knowledge. Albert Einstein

What if everything is an illusion and nothing exists? In that case, I definitely overpaid for my carpet. Woody Allen

I know of no more encouraging fact than the unquestionable ability of man to elevate his life by conscious endeavor. Henry David Thoreau

Caution: Cape does not enable user to fly. Batman costume warning label

‘Tis distance lends enchantment to the view, And robes the mountain in its azure hue. Thomas Campbell

The travel writer seeks the world we have lost – the lost valleys of the imagination. Alexander Cockburn

Let him who elevates himself above humanity . . . say, if he pleases, “I will never compromise;” but let no one who is not above the frailties of our common nature disdain compromise. Henry Clay

The 2009 Sagittarius Full Moon

by

June 7, 2009

2:13 pm EDT / 11:13am PDT/6:13 pm GT

17 Sagittarius 07

When a chart makes an important point, it says it again and again and again. The skies have been showing us all spring that we’re in an all-encompassing process of integration (mind/heart, masculine/feminine, individual/community, earthly/spiritual) and that physical existence is where we both work this out and enjoy it. The Full Moon in Sagittarius continues the message and pushes us to work this integration into the foundation of our lives.

The Gemini/Sagittarius axis is a mental one. Gemini moves about freely and quickly gathering and spreading information, while Sagittarius explores and attempts to make sense of the data flow. The two weeks since the New Moon in Gemini have been more slow, plodding and contemplative than the usual Gemini way, because its ruler Mercury has been in earth-bound Taurus and retrograde for half of the time. Our minds have been working differently. We have been picking up and passing around information that’s practical and useful, a lot of it involving relationships, finances and how we earn our money.

The Sun, representing our rational or masculine nature, is still in this mode. The Moon, representing the nonrational and the feminine, is tapped into something greater than what the Sun is experiencing. She is under the rulership of Jupiter, who’s tight these days with Chiron, Neptune and Uranus. The Moon is vibrating with communal awareness and non-earthly guidance. She wants to understand the bigger picture behind the information flow. It’s as if our minds are looking at a mound of strangely shaped pieces of cardboard and marveling at their individual contours and colors, while our hearts are looking for the box cover with the picture that the puzzle pieces are supposed to form.

The way out is through Saturn in Virgo, with each of us methodically assembling the puzzle pieces in our individual spot on this earth, whether we have a conscious understanding of the puzzle picture or not. The Sun and the Moon are making a T-square to Saturn, a tense and dynamic aspect configuration that can be resolved only by going through the planet in the middle. The Sun and the mind have the practical data. The Moon and the heart have the greater awareness. It’s time for them to apply their gifts together, and the place to do it is in our individual lives. Saturn in Virgo has been urging us for 18 months to get our lives, bodies and routines in order. He spent the first four and a half months of the year retrograde while the integration process kicked in. Now that we are getting the hang of integration and he has gone direct, we bring new skills to the organizing and boundary work that Saturn in Virgo is counseling. Our hearts are equally engaged in the work, and so is our connection to community and to spirit. Watch what builds and mounts as the Full Moon approaches. You’ll soon feel compelled to act on it – in alignment with your mind, heart and soul.

The Sabian Symbol for the Moon at 18 ° Sagittarius is
TINY CHILDREN PLAYING IN SUNBONNETS.

Commentary: ‘Tiny Children Playing in Sunbonnets’ is an image that brings to mind childlike, carefree fun in a protective, caring environment. The ‘Children’ are protected from the strong and sometimes fierce rays of the sun by wearing ‘Sunbonnets’. We can assume that their mothers or other carers have put them on for them. They don’t have to worry about sunburn and being exposed to the elements, all they need to do is play. Although they may interact with the other ‘Children’, some may just play their own individual games side-by-side with each other.

Oracle: In your situation, someone may be in need of protection at the moment, and it is most likely for their own good, as long as there is not a sense of being “overprotected” and insulated from having to be responsible for themselves. Without having to worry about complicated details and difficult consequences, the feeling of a sense of security and safety can lead to more carefree and playful moments. Don’t be distracted by efforts being made by others on your behalf, sometimes we need to be shielded by others from harmful elements. However, sometimes we also need to feel or intuit our way through the surface appearance of what’s really going on. There can be a sense of having to keep some emotion, or anger, away, so as not to disturb or frighten others, or ourselves but this may lead to having the “blinkers” on and not seeing life as it truly is. Is there a sense of naivety here and missing the real point of life? Is someone being kept in the dark, or kept from seeing reality? On the other hand, you may need to look after others and ensure that their well-being is at the top of the list of priorities. Approaching this question with a childlike, carefree attitude, whilst all the while keeping a true eye on the situation, will probably bring the message that’s needed. There’s a need to remember to play and have fun.

Keywords: Care taken with small beginnings. Protection or blinkering? Propaganda that hides more severe life realities. Censorship. Innocence. Being treated like a child. Mollycoddling. Sunblocks and sunscreens.

The Caution: Overprotection by institutionalized procedures that can lead to not being able to see the whole picture. “Organized religion” and it’s blinding of society to the true joy within and without. Infantile behavior. Being left in the dark without a clue as to what’s going on. Naivety. Being overshadowed by ego.

Once you bring life into the world, you must protect it. We must protect it by changing the world. Elie Wiesel

With each passage of human growth we must shed a protective structure [like a hardy crustacean]. We are left exposed and vulnerable-but also yeasty and embryonic again, capable of stretching in ways we hadn’t known before. Gail Sheehy

Won’t the new ‘Suggested for Mature Audience’ protect our youngsters from such films? I don’t believe so. I know many forty-five-year old men with the mentalities of six-year-olds, and my feeling is that they should not see such pictures, either. Shirley Temple Black

Let children read whatever they want and then talk about it with them. If parents and kids can talk together, we won’t have as much censorship because we won’t have as much fear. Judy Blume

The 2009 Gemini New Moon

May 24 09

3 Gemini 28

May 24, 2009

8:12 AM EDT / 5:12 AM PDT/ 12:12 PM GMT

This month’s Gemini New Moon brings our mental processes and communications into the alignment process that is currently happening with our hearts and wills. The planetary symbols of the heart and will (and of the feminine and masculine), Venus and Mars, merged last month, are traveling together and will merge again in June. Their union permeated last month’s Taurus New Moon, which was ruled by Venus. Now the Sun and the Moon are repeating this merging in Mercury’s domain of Gemini. The sequence drives the message home to our minds that our hearts are to be respected, honored and listened to.

A New Moon is always a time of beginnings or entering a new phase. Because the Moon’s ruler Mercury is retrograde, whatever we begin now will probably not proceed to fruition in the way we’re used to matters unfolding after a New Moon. The playing out may be slower. It may require putting existing business in order first, or going back over old territory to pick up helpful information, or doing research as a prerequisite. The playing out may be delayed. We could start something and have little indication that anything is developing until after Mercury turns direct – or possibly until he re-enters Gemini next month. The seeds of the New Moon that do show immediate progress could hit a noticeable growth spurt at those times.

This New Moon will stray from the norm for Gemini, too. Gemini is a sign of flexibility and swiftness in movement, thoughts and communications. Because it likes to flit from one place or piece of information to another, a New Moon in Gemini can whip up the chatter and get our minds running in many, many directions. Focused and intense it is not – at least, not normally. What makes this New Moon different is the adjustment aspect it is making to Pluto, which deepens, focuses and transforms everything it touches. Our minds will not be careening all over creation as usual with a Gemini Moon. We will be gathering and distributing information in a more compact space. Our mental processes are being sharpened and refined, and this New Moon ushers in a new phase in how they work.

This New Moon encourages taking control of our thoughts and making conscious choices about the ones we let in. Some of these choices will involve ingrained thought patterns. The South Node of the Moon, which represents programming and old behaviors we resort to when under stress, is in an opportunity aspect to the New Moon, and the two points are making an aspect called a Finger of God pointing at Pluto. Transformation and evolution in our thinking are the cosmic imperative. We can – and must – move beyond patterns of thinking that we picked up without realizing it, from concepts we came in with as part of our genetic heritage, to phrases that lodged in our minds while we were in pre-language state, to slogans and sayings we’ve picked up from years of commercial-enhanced, media-driven living. The media’s influence (and brainwashing, some would say) is part of the spin-off of the triple conjunction of Jupiter, Neptune and Chiron that is coinciding with this New Moon. The Finger of God aspect reminds us that we do not have to soak up whatever we encounter on TV, online and in ads and the movies. We do not have to be controlled by the messages we learned from the media, schools and relatives while we were growing up. We can choose to think for ourselves and to occupy our minds with subjects that have meaning to us. Individually and collectively, we are entering a new stage in how our minds work, what we think about and the forms and quality of communication we want to engage in. The North Node of the Moon repeats this message by making a harmonious aspect to the New Moon and a growth one to Pluto. Our thought processes are evolving. And at the center of our thought processes? Our hearts.

The Sabian Symbol for the Sun and Moon at 4 Gemini is
HOLLY AND MISTLETOE BRING CHRISTMAS SPIRIT TO A HOME.

Commentary: ‘Holly and Mistletoe Bring Christmas Spirit to a Home’ is a wonderfully warm and inviting image. The ancient Druids of Britain regarded ‘Mistletoe’ as sacred and believed it had both magical powers and medicinal properties. They referred to it as the “heal all,” although now we know the berries can be poisonous, so care needs to be taken with them. “Kissing beneath the Mistletoe” is a tradition that has developed over the years as we have built barriers to more spontaneous expressions of affection. It is almost as though the ‘Mistletoe’ and the ‘Spirit of Christmas’ have become an excuse for us to be able to show our feelings. We have developed these types of rituals to compensate for what has truly been lost. ‘Mistletoe’ was so sacred to the Druids that if two enemies met beneath a tree on which ‘Mistletoe’ was growing, they would lay down their weapons, exchange greetings and observe a 24-hour truce.

Oracle: ‘Christmas’ represents a time when we can reconnect with loved ones, family, or, in a larger sense, humanity, to discover the strengths and joys in the cultural and religious bonds that hold families and people together. However, we don’t have to wait until a special celebration, such as ‘Christmas’ to feel close to friends and family. The openness that the ‘Holly and Mistletoe’ represents should be carried in our hearts always and not restricted merely to a few days of the year. Realizing how important those near and dear to us really are we should put in the effort to reach out to others at any time. It is not just about acknowledging these bonds, but also affectionately embracing them. ‘Mistletoe’ is said to represent regeneration and the restoration of family life. Perhaps it is time to bring that ‘Spirit’ of peace and reconciliation into the home and the family right now, regardless of the time or the season.

Keywords: Social celebrations of the spirit. Returning to basic joys. Remembering past celebrations of family and social cohesion. Kissing under the mistletoe. Using simple gestures to remind us of larger realities. Warmth, joy and anticipation.

The Caution: The use of superficial tricks. Performances to achieve the appearance of happiness or familial ties. Neglecting family. Excluding others because of religious beliefs. Rituals that have no depth or true meaning. Loneliness. Not being in the spirit of things.

I saw mummy kissing Santa Claus underneath the mistletoe last night. Song lyrics

The mistletoe hung in the castle hall, the holly-branch shone on the old oak wall. Thomas Haynes Bayly

The holly and the ivy Are plants that are well known. Of all that grow in the woods The holly bears the crown. Anon

Love is like the wild rose-briar; Friendship like the holly-tree. The holly is dark when the rose-briar blooms, But which will bloom most constantly? Emily Bronte

A good conscience is a continual Christmas. Benjamin Franklin

The 2009 Scorpio Full Moon

by

May 9, 2009

12:02 AM EDT / 4:02 AM GT/9:02PM PDT (May 8, 2009)

18 Scorpio 41 / 18 Taurus 41

A Scorpio Full Moon is always intense. This year’s has a laser-like focus that will make the intensity feel more profound and powerful than the norm. That’s because there will be little that is trivial or extraneous to clutter the experience. Distractions and nonessentials have been stripped away, and everything that remains will receive all the attention. Less is more, we are about to experience, and how.

This year’s Scorpio Full Moon occurs right after its rulers, Pluto and Venus, have completed the last of the three confrontations they’ve engaged in since February. Each skirmish has demanded a cold, calculating look at money, possessions, relationships and our own worth – both in terms of the definitions of what we value and the emotional or financial currency we use to measure it. If something doesn’t meet the our personal definition or provide the desired exchange, it has been pitched or marked for tossing away.

This Full Moon illuminates where each of us is in this process. The Taurus/Scorpio axis pits our personal resources and worth against what we have or create with others, along with primal phobias, desires to possess and control, and attitudes about the deepest sharing or merging (taxes, sex and death). Job and economic instability have been on the radar for many people, even those who strive for a reality more optimistic than the one constantly being shored up by mainstream news. Don’t be surprised if financial hysteria hits a fevered pitch now, but you are under no obligation to succumb to it. As emotions crest and the hidden costs of the bailout and related dramas come to light, keep your attention instead on your own energetic balance sheet. This Full Moon can put you in touch with how you really feel about your personal and joint security and give you X-ray vision into your fears, your attachments and, most importantly, what you are building in the joint situations in your life.

Whatever emerges, expect to be compelled to do something about it. This Full Moon is making the dynamic aspect of a square to the February 9 lunar eclipse, which came on the heels of the second exact Saturn/Uranus opposition. Each of us realized then what we were eventually going to have to leave. The time for saying goodbye begins with this Full Moon. Preparations now move from thoughts to concrete steps. Even if you are not ready to walk out the door, figuratively or literally, it’s time to gather up your belongings and put your suitcases by the door. By August, when this Leo/Aquarius eclipse cycle runs its course, your emotional life – and many aspects of your outer life – will occupy a very different terrain.

Concrete steps toward that new terrain should come naturally, because the Sun and the Moon are both making positive aspects to Saturn. The Sun’s trine to him, exact on Tuesday, is still resonating during the Full Moon, facilitating responsible, committed action in our own best interests. The Moon makes a sextile to Saturn only a few hours before meeting the Sun, an aspect that opens the door to emotionally responsible responses. The Saturn contacts make us willing to act and react as the mature, responsible (are you getting the drift?) adults we are now.

We know the difference between baubles with fleeting appeal and the resources we really value. With this Full Moon, we sort out more metaphoric trinkets, commit to what’s most important and set up structures, inner and outer, to support our choices. Any resistance will prove futile when the Sun challenges the Moon’s ruler Pluto by declination on Saturday and we give in to forces greater than individual ego or will. That submission, and the aftermath of the Full Moon, leads a great sense of security and satisfaction when the Moon harmonizes with the Sun’s ruler Venus on Sunday. Life is good. It really is.

The Sabian Symbols for this Full Moon caution us to consider whether our words match our own values or someone else’s, and to allow to come into form the new value paradigm that has been growing in each of us.

The Sabian Symbol for the Moon at 19 ° Scorpio is
A PARROT LISTENING AND THEN TALKING, REPEATS A CONVERSATION HE HAS OVERHEARD.

Commentary: ‘A Parrot’ is shown ‘Listening and Then Talking’. He ‘Repeats a Conversation He Has Overheard’. The ‘Parrot’ has the ability to mimic what’s being said and the various sounds that surround him. In esoteric symbolism, birds often symbolize spiritual forces.

Oracle: This Symbol often infers some level of spiritual channeling, as thoughts and words can sometimes appear to course through a person, especially if the “messages” seem to come from somewhere else. It can show someone who is receptive to the thoughts and ideas that are around, or in the environment, and can process the information to the point where it becomes their own. The ability to convey the facts or a message accurately and responsibly will be very important to the outcome. However, there is a need for caution with this Symbol. It can imply messages, talk or gossip that loses its integrity once it reaches someone who operates on an unconscious level. Translating things into different languages or repeating them can lead to things being either more understood or less. One needs to be accurate about what was actually said, and what was meant, before any misunderstandings take place. Look to the source of the information in this situation; is it reliable and was the original message understood in its entirety? Is this a “conscious” retelling of the story? Is what’s being said coming from the heart, or is it really not worth listening to? Also, this Symbol can show someone who expects instructions or orders to be followed without question.

Keywords: Transmitting information or knowledge. The need to integrate things into consciousness. Recorded messages. Answering and fax machines. Mumbling that is difficult to understand. Translators, birds, parrots, news reporters, gossips, stool pigeons. Telephone operators. Messages from strange places. Automated responses. The Caution: Rote responses that are ill considered. “Towing the party line” without having any opinion of your own. Going over the same territory. Losing true meaning through repetition. Repeating without knowing the real meaning or purpose. Meaningless banter. Tunnel vision. Gossiping. Missing the true essence of what’s being said. Not having a mind of one’s own. Brainwashing. Re-runs of the same old line. Broken records.

Sometimes they write what I say and not what I mean. Baseball player Pedro Guerrero on reporters

INTERPRETER, n. One who enables two persons of different languages to understand each other by repeating to each other what it would have been to the interpreter’s advantage for the other to have said. Ambrose Bierce

Accept your genius and say what you think. Ralph Waldo Emerson

You have the right to remain silent. Anything you say will be misquoted then used against you. Bumper sticker

When you talk, you repeat what you already know; when you listen, you often learn something. Jared Sparks

The real menace in dealing with a five-year-old is that in no time at all you begin to sound like a five-year-old. Jean Kerr

Children seldom misquote you. In fact, they usually repeat word for word what you shouldn’t have said. Anon

The best time to hold your tongue is the time you feel you must say something or bust. Josh Billings

The Sabian Symbol for the Sun at 19° Taurus is
A NEW CONTINENT IS RISING OUT OF THE OCEAN

.

Commentary: The Symbol of ‘A New Continent Rising Out of the Ocean’ is a powerful image of new opportunities and a whole new sphere of operation. When a land mass emerges from the ocean – the ‘New Continent’ that is ‘Rising’ – there is usually some kind of eruption or disruption that precedes it. A whole field of activity is coming to light as this fresh, new arena of opportunity erupts.

Oracle: A ‘New Continent’ is ‘Rising Out of the Ocean’; it might feel as though it is coming out of nowhere, or from somewhere you didn’t expect, however things have probably been building up for some time. Perhaps you saw it coming, or maybe you weren’t aware that the changes you’re seeing would go as far as they have. One thing’s for sure: it is coming from somewhere deep within your emotional and spiritual development. There is a promise of rewards and brand new beginnings. However, this is only the beginning. There is much work to be done developing this possibility into something fertile and productive. Observe and learn from the new things that are erupting into conscious reality. You will, or you will have to, find that extra spark to create a brand new, original opportunity. What is possible, and what is not, will become more obvious as time goes on. You may feel a little alienated in this new ‘Continent’ or sphere of activity, but that’s only relative to the conditions of what it is that you’re leaving behind. There has probably been a recent period of throwing out things that haven’t worked, things that have cluttered up your life and have been in the way of your forward growth. What you’ve done or achieved in the past has led to this, but these new beginnings need to be met with a fresh sense of purpose, confidence and possibility.

Keywords: Enormous potentiality emerging. New trends and ways of being. Sudden eruptions of talent or fields of endeavor. The greenhouse effect and global warming. Atlantis and other ancient underwater cities. Evolution. Patience. Developing slowly but surely. Emerging generations of people. New environments. Things feeling suddenly foreign. The birth of a nation.

The Caution: Continually seeking “new worlds” rather than finding a place in the existing one. Not taking responsibility for the birth of the new. Not showing respect for the old or established.

One does not discover new continents without consenting to lose sight of the shore for a very long time. Andre Gide

AUSTRALIA, n. A country lying in the South Sea, whose industrial and commercial development has been unspeakably retarded by an unfortunate dispute among geographers as to whether it is a continent or an island. Ambrose Bierce

Today, the treacherous, unexplored areas of the world are not in continents or seas – they are in the minds of men. Allen Claxton

I know that Nature designs that this whole continent, not merely these thirty-six states, shall be, sooner or later, within the magic circle of the American union. William Seward

Nay, be a Columbus to whole new continents and worlds within you, opening new channels, not of trade, but of thought. Henry David Thoreau
