This weekend brings the first New Moon since Uranus completed an 84-year tour of the zodiac and launched his latest one. Even though we are but days into it, we are already clearly and unmistakably in a new cycle; now we are going to explore it with our minds and more. Because this New Moon is in Gemini and ruled by Mercury, the cosmic messenger, we are in for a spate of information, messages and ideas that involve and speak directly to this new phase.
Mercury is having conversations all over the sky. He’s working directly with the Jupiter/Uranus conjunction that’s initiating the new phase, and this relationship is making him, for the moment, the spokesperson for the conjunction. His opportunity aspect to this pair is fanning the flames coming off their fireballs and opening doorways to new information, technology and ways of getting around. As if to emphasize Mercury’s role, the New Moon is echoing the call of the new, by making an aspect to the Jupiter/Uranus conjunction that demands action. Pay particular attention to the types of offers you receive, as well as to how messages come to you in the next few weeks. The quality and sources of information and the mode of delivery will be different than they have been previously. What you hear and learn will shed light on the changes that are erupting in and around you. It will also energetically separate you from your pack. The information will motivate you to get moving, now, on your own, without a worry — or even a thought — about what anyone else is doing. No more waiting for other people to get ready and show up. As information comes in, your mind, and possibly your feet, will be off and running. Opportunities for short trips are highly probable. Take advantage of them, particularly if they will take you to destinations you’ve never visited or required you to travel in a way you have not before. Those characteristics are likely to result, by the way, even if you’re going to a familiar place.
Mercury’s relationship to Mars and Neptune-conjunct-Chiron is another harbinger of movement and change. The messenger is squaring the planet of action, the planet of illusion vs. illumination and the point of our wounding, a dynamic configuration that puts him in the pressure point of a t-square. This is one intense and largely self-contained pressure cooker. Mercury rules Mars, Neptune rules Chiron and Uranus rules Neptune (and, to complete the picture, Uranus’ traveling companion Jupiter is ruled by Mars.) The skies are demanding new approaches, new processes, new information, new ways of gathering and disseminating information and new ways of getting about on the planet. With the New Moon enjoying an easy flow to Neptune and Chiron, approaches are possible that call on higher guidance and compassionate awareness of the impact on all of life. Rethinking the methods and vehicles we use to get ahead is definitely in order. With this configuration happening at the first Moon of the new Uranian cycle, we can expect that new approaches to transportation issues will be a theme of the next seven years, at least, during Uranus‘ transit through Aries. Interestingly, Chiron’s move to his current position — the first degree of Pisces, where he is now retrograde — coincided with the oil rig blow-out in the Gulf of Mexico, which resulted in a wound to the sea that has not yet been able to be healed. The t-square in this New Moon is likely to dislodge anger, more demands for action and calls for answer and information about the crisis — and whip up discussion about dependence on fossil fuels.
Mercury’s adjustment aspect to Pluto is also likely stir talk about fossil fuels, as well as the political, economic and social power wielded by large corporations. The personal impact will be profound as well. This aspect puts us at a crossroads, personally and collectively. Decisions now will take us down one route and close off another. Doubling back for a do-over won’t be easy, and may not be likely at all. These either-or choices are being made at the beginning of two major cycles, Uranus’ seven years in Aries and the next 84 years of his travels through the entire zodiac, so choices now will set the tone for both phases. On a personal level, we’re facing choices about the quality of our conversations and the information we take in (honest? fair? ethical? gossipy? researched? uplifting? paranoid? inciting?), about the types and purposes of our technology, and about the ways we move about on the surface of the planet. We may be cutting some people out, some topics out or some modes of travel out. We may be having verbal interactions, intended or spontaneous, that bring monsters from the depths of our psyches up for air, or that amputate dead, diseased or toxic situations, or that require us to choose sides in a power play. We’ve been stripping our priorities back into a narrow and personally meaningful focus for the past two years. Now we are freeing our minds, thought patterns and usually flight paths of clutter that does not fit these narrowed priorities.
Our hearts stand ready to assist in these choices, thanks to the growth aspect between Mercury and Venus. This cooperative relationship colors the Moon cycle and, more importantly, Uranus’ immediate and long term phases. Whatever choices we make now, they will not be what they would have been a year ago, either in substance or in process. Our minds and hearts have evolved into a new way of working together. The mind is no longer calling the shots and talking us out of listening to our hearts. Our hearts are fully participating in our choices now.
Even though Mercury is networking with most of the sky, and even though he is in high-flying Gemini, he has a grounding cord just now that’s going to be useful for all of us. Mercury’s trine to Saturn adds a practical spin and functionality to the information, messages and discussions that arise now. The Sun and the Moon may be in a harsh aspect to Saturn, demanding that we exercise discernment with information that we allow to enter our heads and clearly communicate and safeguard boundaries for our own well-being. The demand will not be hard to honor, however. The harmony between New Moon’s ruler and Saturn will grease the way.
Here is Lynda Hill’s interpretation of the Sabian Symbol for the New Moon at 22 Gemini, reprinted with her kind permission from her book The Sabian Symbols As An Oracle, the Special Edition:
DANCING COUPLES CROWD THE BARN IN A HARVEST FESTIVAL
Commentary: ‘Dancing Couples Crowd the Barn in a Harvest Festival’. Successful achievements have been accomplished, such as the ‘Harvest’, and efforts have come to a fruitful conclusion and now it is time to gather together with others to celebrate. Everyone should share the pleasure that comes from a successful ‘Harvest’. The hard work is put behind them and they reap the rewards of the benefits available to them in their leisure time. As ‘The Barn’ is ‘Crowded’, many people from the community come together to enjoy each other, the music and to dance. By gathering together and celebrating, a sense of community spirit can develop where there is always something to be celebrated, even if not your own success.
Oracle: ‘ This Symbol shows the need to be in tune with seasonal rhythms and the natural flow of life. The ‘Harvest’ may mean many things. It can be the actual bringing in of a ‘Harvest’, the birth of a baby, the first performance at school, a religious ceremony, such as a communion or bar mitzvah, or a job well done. It is wonderful when we all come together and warmly and sincerely congratulate someone who has good news without nagging feelings of jealousy or resentment. There is a need to get back to a simpler, conservative level of enjoyment where each and every person’s achievement is everybody’s pleasure. This can lead to an increased understanding and concern for the individuals within our community. It is also possible for one person’s pain to become everyone’s care. Whatever, the feeling of a healthy heart and a healthy mind, while taking a break from the struggles of providing, is what gives us the strength for the battles of life. Perhaps it’s time to kick up your heels and dance. Whatever, see if you can take some time out to enjoy your environment, the gifts of nature and the people around you.
Keywords: ‘ Celebrating the warmth and providence of the Earth. The joy of nature’s harvest. Joining with others to celebrate. The reality of rhythmical or seasonal adjustments. Agriculture. Good old time values. Issues of pride in one’s place. Going out, having fun, listening and dancing to music. Square dancing, ballroom dancing etc. Barns and dance halls.
The Caution: ‘Being the wallflower and not participating. Waiting for a special invitation rather than responding to the possibilities available. Resentment. Isolation. Going alone. False displays of community. Shallowness. Attention paid to only those who are important. Not participating because of not having a partner.
The one thing that can solve most of our problems is dancing. ‘ James Brown
