9 Libra 17
This year’s Libra Full Moon turns the restructuring that we have been experiencing in external situations into a deeply personal process and experience. The skies are inviting us to rewrite the ground rules for the relationship between our hearts and minds and bring them more into cooperation and alliance. This isn’t just a momentary exercise, but one that could determine our responsiveness down the line. The event is putting us through prep work for this summer, when the early degrees of the cardinal signs will be exploding with activity.
Relationships of all kinds are the theme of this Full Moon, which takes place on the axis that rules them. The Sun in Aries represents the individual component of a relationship — one person’s sense of self, drive, motivations and autonomy. The Moon in Libra represents what the individual experiences when another person enters the picture — from the individual’s perception of the Other to his personal definitions of what happens between two people. How we experience and perceive another person is to a large extent a reflection of what’s going on inside us. What we see doesn’t always make us comfortable, but it does offer fodder for growth and evolution, as the aspects accompanying this Moon point out.
Those aspects are energizing and dynamic, in both directions. On the positive side, the Sun’s ruler, Mars, is in a happy aspect to both the Sun and Moon. The warrior god, who is not only finally facing forward after a three-month retrograde but also finally marching ahead, is in a trine to the Sun, fueling our drive, motivation, ambition and independence and inspiring us to go after what we want. The opportunity aspect that Mars is making to the Moon is taking some of the edge off the opposition between the Sun and the Moon, or face-off between the individual’s wants and a partner’s needs. Mars is acting as a mediator or facilitator, making it possible for the pursuits of the individual (or a person’s masculine side/ego) to benefit the partner or union (or a person’s feminine side/heart). He’s in the same opportunity aspect, only tighter, to the Moon’s current close companion, Saturn in Libra, who is adding notes of seriousness, responsibility and commitment to the relationship end of the Full Moon equation. The link to Saturn keeps Mars from acting too quickly, burning out or getting bored; it gives him (and his efforts) staying power and the incentive to active maturely and responsibly.
The Moon’s ruler, Venus, is enjoying compatibility with the Sun, since they are conjunct by sign (but not degreed) in Aries. This alliance also smoothes the Sun/Moon opposition a bit and helps build a bridge between mind and heart or two points of view. Talk and reciprocal understanding come easily and naturally now, with Venus conjunct the cosmic communicator Mercury.
All is not lace hearts and flowers, however. Our own hearts may be happy for the moment with what our egos are up to, but soon will not be content with that alone. Venus is making the approach to demanding action from Mars; by Saturday, after she has slipped into her first home of Taurus, she’ll let him know exactly what she wants. Whatever we see growing under this Full Moon will galvanize us to speak up and issue our own personal requirements by the weekend.
Not that the days before the weekend will be calm an quiet. Action will occur; profound change will occur; evolution will occur. The Full Moon is adding an arm to the ongoing square between Saturn and Pluto and expanding the configuration into a t-square. The release point for the pressure is Pluto in Capricorn, which requires cutting anything that is deteriorating, damaged or outmoded from our support systems, foundations, long-term goals and concepts of security. With the Full Moon in the picture, surgery is also in order on our egos and hearts, definitions of self and relationships, and the terms of our agreements and alliances. The first and most important place to turn the scalpel is, of course, within. One point of reference for this process is New Year’s Eve. This month’s Full Moon is within a degree of squaring the lunar eclipse that took place then. Ponder how much your life — especially your internal life — has changed since then. What no longer has a place in it (attitudes, beliefs, expectations, agreements, definitions, situations, relationships)? The energies of this Full Moon are pushing you to update all of them to fit who you currently are and what your life, desires and goals currently are.
This Full Moon is also a precursor of where we’re heading this summer. It’s squaring the degree of the Cancer solar eclipse that will take place on July 11, when a grand cross will be occurring in the early degrees of the cardinal signs. We’re lightening our loads now, so that we will be able to maneuver nimbly when the summer’s explosions spur us to immediate action. Think of this week as prep, as trial runs, as emptying and airing out luggage, rethinking every item before putting it back in, tossing out a lot and repacking what remains more compactly and with room to spare. Get your mental house, your heart and, to the extent that circumstances allow, your relationships in order, then face the direction you would like to go. You may not be able move forward now, but you certainly will this summer. Since the starting gun will go off when you least expect it, ready yourself now.
The Sabian Symbols for this Full Moon, taken together, point out the higher potential of the dynamic astrological configuration that is currently taking place. The Moon’s symbol suggests the importance (and likelihood) of finding personal emotional security and safety, while the Sun’s symbol speaks to the evolution in structures and relationship dynamics that is inherent in the ongoing Saturn/Pluto square.
Here is Lynda Hill’s interpretation of the Sabian Symbol for the Moon at 10 Libra, reprinted with her kind permission from her book The Sabian Symbols As An Oracle, the Special Edition:
A CANOE IS APPROACHING SAFETY THROUGH DANGEROUS WATERS
Commentary: ‘A Canoe is Approaching Safety’ implies a time of calm and reassurance ahead. It is coming to ‘Safety Through Dangerous Waters’. The way ahead is showing itself and there is an assurance that one is reaching their destination after a difficult or even life-threatening time. The person in the ‘Canoe’ has probably been through a hair-raising or rough experience, having to shoot the rapids and having to be very adaptable to changing conditions.
Oracle: In the situation facing you, your ‘Canoe is Approaching Safety’, However, it is not quite there yet, and it is likely the hard times are not completely through. You are, most likely, not quite where you’d like to be in this situation. You may be experiencing ‘Dangerous Waters’, but there is a guarantee of safety and “smooth sailing” in the near future. Things are moving into a new state of equilibrium. Although there is relief in sight, be sure not to switch off your attention to the difficulties or dangers that you are still experiencing. The last battles can be the ones that beat you. Even if you are the type who thrives on the thrill of danger, it’s important to respect the times of calm to reflect on the lessons that have come from the recent dangers or difficulties. The difficulties in your situation are likely to have been quite arduous, and yet valuable in terms of your resistance against difficult times to come. Neglecting to take advantage of the placid waters (the ‘Safety’ that is promised) is a waste of a valuable opportunity and may lead to being unprepared if the ‘Dangerous Waters’ come again. The coming calm is an opportunity to review what has passed, and prepare for whatever is yet to come. Before long you’ll realize that you’ve come through difficult straits and the worst of it is over.
Keywords: The calm after the storm. Navigating difficult straits and coming out okay. White water rafting. Skydiving and other risky activities. Rough waters vs. plain sailing. Recovery. Remission. Light at the end of the tunnel. Personal initiations. Trials of test and defeat. Being stoic. Retaining dignity and graciousness. Exercising care and restraint. Avoiding over exaggerated enthusiasm. Deliverance on many levels. Salvation. Exercising care. Staying on track.
The Caution: Neglecting to take a time to rest. Taking foolhardy risks, believing that all will be okay. Pre-empting situations without completing things in the present. Thinking that “lightning never strikes in the same place twice”. Shooting more rapids. Freezing up and not moving.
God promises a safe landing but not a calm passage. Bulgarian Proverb
The winds and waves are always on the side of the ablest navigators. Edward Gibbon
I said here’s the river I want to flow on, here’s the direction I want to go, and put my boat in. I was ready for the river to take unexpected turns and present obstacles. Nancy Woodhull
The man who is swimming against the stream knows the strength of it. Woodrow Wilson
In this world there is always danger for those who are afraid of it. George Bernard Shaw
Do the thing you fear most and the death of fear is certain. Mark Twain
I am driven into a desperate strait and cannot steer a middle course. Philip Massinger
Call on God, but row away from the rocks. Indian Proverb

Lynda Hill’s interpretation of the Sabian Symbol for the Sun at 10 degrees Aries is:
A TEACHER GIVES NEW SYMBOLIC FORMS TO TRADITIONAL IMAGES
Commentary: ‘A Teacher Gives New Symbolic Forms to Traditional Images’. This Symbol shows someone who can take a thing or a situation and transform and update it. The ‘Traditional Images’ can be ideas, objects, icons, beliefs; things we are familiar with. That a ‘Teacher Gives New Symbolic Forms’ shows the ability to restructure, reinterpret and present them more in tune with the times. It indicates a need for a fresh and revitalized perspective on things. This is what Marc Edmund Jones and Elsie Wheeler did with the Sabian Symbol “experiment”. Dane Rudhyar took the Symbols a step further, giving them further depth and insight.
Oracle: In the situation facing you there’s a need to analyze and perhaps rewrite what has been observed and learned in the traditional roles we live out. Things may need a new interpretation to bring them up to speed with today’s thinking. Someone in this situation may have truly original ideas, but there’s a possibility of holding these back, feeling it has all been done before. The message here is to allow yourself to be creative and look for modern answers, seeing things in a different light or from a different angle. This may lead to realizations you have never even considered or imagined. Bringing out something new will revitalize your situation and affect those around you. This can bring new understandings about people and the way things work. There could be a revisioning of how one sees something like marriage, work, relationships, education etc. Sometimes this requires one to be daring, to “step outside the box”. Don’t stick to limitations of your own or those others place on you. You may have to make a stand against those in a higher or more exalted position that think they know more than you – perhaps they don’t. Be prepared to take a different stance or look at things from a new and fresh perspective.
Keywords: New dimensions breaking old thought forms or behavior. Quantum science. Innovation and re-creation. Working with educational tools. Finding new inspiration. Being “ahead of one’s time”. New-age consciousness. Ideas out of the past for the future. Sticking one’s neck out. Rewriting the book.
The Caution: Rejecting old ideas because they are old instead of reforming them. Throwing things of worth out, without examining them. Having little respect for things that are really worthwhile or traditional. Sticking with the tried and true, no matter what. Thinking that no one will be interested in your ideas.
It is better to fail in originality than to succeed in imitation. Herman Melville
Originality does not consist in saying what no one has ever said before, but in saying exactly what you think yourself. James Stephens
