This month’s Cancer New Moon is the first of its kind in our lifetime. It’s the first New Moon to oppose Pluto since its entry into Capricorn. The opposition is tight, too, not merely in the same degree but within less than half a degree. As a result, there’s no sweet, cozy new beginning for us this month; this Moon is potent and unmistakable in impact. It launches an entirely new phase in our relationship to family, nurturing and the feminine.

We’ve been prepared for it. The role of the feminine has been undergoing empowerment all spring, as one celestial event after another has elevated her to even footing with the masculine. The ongoing event has been the twosome of Venus and Mars, who have been traveling in tandem for months, and who completed their latest embrace a day before the New Moon. What’s more, they are in a tight trine with Saturn, Pluto’s current ruler — about as tight as the New Moon’s opposition to Pluto, not merely in the same degree but within less than half of one. It’s definitely a time of merging, internally and with others, and of bringing the alignment of male and female directly into our mundane lives. This is not fleeting; it’s the way life is now and hereafter. The feminine is not enjoying a moment in the spotlight, only to retreat into obscurity and powerlessness. The New Moon’s opposition to Pluto is purifying and strengthening the power of the feminine, and of all the characteristics associated with Cancer.

For each of us personally this New Moon is a time of stripping away detritus in the Cancer-ruled areas of our charts. Family, food and nurturing issues come under the scalpel now, and so does one of the most highly charged archetypes in our society: the mother. Cancer is Mommy Central, where images run the gamut from the loving caretaker who kisses boo-boos and makes them better, to the source of after-school milk and cookies, to the martyr who serves everything with a side of guilt, to Mommy Dearest and worse. The stress from Pluto in this New Moon may summon some of her scarier guises, but if they do surface, it’s to purge imbalances and redeem the role of the mother. Societally, we have been terrified of her for centuries. This New Moon is a turning point in our perception and her role. The New Moon’s adjustment aspect to the North Node (where the collective is headed) and growth aspect to the South Node (where we’ve been) signals this as well.

Watch what happens in your relationship to your own mother, to your family and to the nurturing caretakers in your life. Whether your mother is alive or not, your relationship continues and will evolve now. Some people will discover the fierceness of their attachment to their bloodline; others will cut away diseased or unsupportive associations that have marched under the banner of family. Watch, too, what changes in how you engage in nurturing. If you have poured and sloshed it in all directions, including onto barren ground, the pattern will stop, as this New Moon begins a phase of streamlined and selective expression. With Saturn in Virgo ruling Pluto in Capricorn, the mandate is here to accept, honor and direct your nurturing impulses into healthy receptacles — and to extend them, first of all, to yourself.

In the light of this first-of-its-kind New Moon, you can begin to transform your relationship with food (by growing some, for starters), with your mother, with your children and, most of all, with the parenting that you have internalized into your being. It’s time to take responsibility for your own care and feeding. The weight of expectation you take off your family and close relationships will invite all concerned to step into their own power.

We have a lot of time to work with these concepts. This New Moon is the first of two Cancer New Moons this year. This one is at the very beginning of Cancer. The second, a month from now, is at the final degree of the sign. It’s also a solar eclipse, in an eclipse cycle that continues into the summer of 2010. We are lightening the emotional load for the long haul. This Moon cycle, and the coming eclipses, are transitioning us from one set of definitions for family, marriage and nurturing to another.

The Sabian Symbol for the Sun and the Moon at 2 Cancer is
A Man on a Magic Carpet Observes Vast Vistas Below.

Commentary: ‘A Man on a Magic Carpet Observes Vast Vistas Below’ is an image straight out of the “Arabian Nights” stories. King Solomon would tell the wind where he wanted to go, and the carpet rose in the air, landing him in the place he designated. In this Symbol, the ‘Magic Carpet’ can elevate the ‘Man’ above everything going on in his life, making it possible for him to escape problems and fly above and away from them. He is able to see what’s going on from a calm, possibly detached and rather creative state, with his imagination working strongly.

Oracle: Even though you may feel that there are many possibilities open to you, you may be unable to proceed with realistic, grounded plans, leaving you in a state of limbo. It’s important to make sure that you are not somehow disconnected from reality. It may be that some of the ‘Vast Vistas’ that are ‘Observed’ are really only fantasy, imagination or wishful thinking. There may be more inspiration in your mind’s eye than can be translated into reality. On the other hand, you are certainly in a state of heightened awareness and have a broad overview of the situation, which can give you an opportunity to plan for future action. Try to accept any positive opportunities that are offered, but allow your self time to put these opportunities into perspective. What is really possible now? There may be feelings of isolation. Perhaps you’re running away from the truth or feeling that you’re the only one who can truly see the whole picture. It is probably best not to rush into anything permanent now. This is something that you have to work through slowly and carefully. Remember the privilege of being given the opportunity of such an elevated view. Take some time, look around, but remember to come back to reality when it’s time!

Keywords: Elevated observations and heightened feelings. Having faith in the good things of life. Not wanting to see the ugly truth of reality. UFO’s and aliens. Escapism. Perspective and imagination. Out of body experiences. Dreams. Seeking transcendence. Astral projection. The dream of far destinations. Film and video.

The Caution: Feeling above everything and unaffected by situations. Losing touch with reality. Missing the point. Trying to avoid what’s going on. Peter Pan attitudes. Not feeling responsible for anything. Longing for something ‘Magic’ to happen. Bugging devices.

Imagination is more important than knowledge. Albert Einstein

What if everything is an illusion and nothing exists? In that case, I definitely overpaid for my carpet. Woody Allen

I know of no more encouraging fact than the unquestionable ability of man to elevate his life by conscious endeavor. Henry David Thoreau

‘Tis distance lends enchantment to the view, And robes the mountain in its azure hue. Thomas Campbell

The travel writer seeks the world we have lost – the lost valleys of the imagination. Alexander Cockburn

Let him who elevates himself above humanity . . . say, if he pleases, “I will never compromise;” but let no one who is not above the frailties of our common nature disdain compromise. Henry Clay
