July’s Full Moon lunar eclipse takes place on the Cancer/Capricorn axis, which defines our private and public place in the world. Where do we feel safe? What do we need to feel loved? What do we want to achieve in our career and what quality and amount of effort are we willing to invest to get it? Who’s the daddy; who’s the baby; who’s our family? These questions will occupy us for the next year, and the answers will prompt big changes. The July Full Moon is the first in the next round of eclipses on this axis, which will continue into July of 2010. (Previous rounds took place from July 1990 through December 1992 and Christmas Day 2000 through June 2002.)

Lunar eclipses drip with revelations. The difference in the quality of the light makes details visible that carry enormous emotional portent. Even though an eclipse involves heightened emotions, and this one takes place in the sign that is emotions central, this one does not allow much room for wallowing. The Moon is trine her ruler, Saturn, who is in an opportunity aspect to the Sun. The emotions that escalate under this Full Moon do more than surface and vent. As tumultuous as some of the revelations and outpourings are, they bring a calming sobriety. They direct attention to practicalities and ramifications and provide incentive to talk about and deal with them.

We’re past the stage of engaging in a dramatic emotional showdown and then slipping right back into the way life has been. This Full Moon is the first in the new emotional regime. It still bares the scalpel marks of Pluto, who inaugurated the current Moon cycle with an opposition to the Cancer New Moon. A lot of squalling may occur, involving pent-up frustrations, slights, neglects, resentments, unrequited attention, smothering, emotional malnutrition, misplaced or abdications of responsibility, gasping and grasping for the nourishment our beings require. The energies won’t support prolonged pouting, though.

This is an internally consistent Full Moon, with all the rulerships of the Full Moon jumping from one to the next in one continuous. The Sun is ruled by the Moon. The Moon is ruled by Saturn. Saturn is ruled by Mercury, which is ruled by the Moon. We’ll make like Scarlett O’ Hara, rising from her knees after the Union forces have sacked her plantation home, and vow, “As God is my witness, I’ll never be hungry again.” We’ll dry our tears, metaphoric and real, roll up our sleeves and do something about our situations. Mommy isn’t going to kiss our boo-boo and make it better. Daddy isn’t going to foot the bill. Each of us must take care of ourselves. And somehow, each of us will know this fact.

This Full Moon takes place at the degree where Saturn spent most of April and June. Think about those months for insight into what is demanding attention now. To understand the phases that are closing in your life, look back to the issues and energies that surrounded you near July 7, 1991, when a Cancer New Moon solar eclipse took place only a couple of degrees away from today’s Full Moon. What has come back around and is culminating? What needs a re-boot?

This Full Moon is a milestone in our evolution. Pluto is in growth and adjustment aspects to the North and South Nodes; Uranus is in adjustment mode with the North and growth with the South. We are rewriting our pasts, making peace with the past, and reworking our attachment to old ways of being.

The Sabian Symbols for this Full Moon speak of spiritual wisdom and cooperation between the sexes.

The Sabian Symbol for the Moon at 16 Capricorn is
SCHOOL GROUNDS FILLED WITH BOYS AND GIRLS IN GYMNASIUM SUITS.

Commentary: ‘School Grounds Filled With Boys and Girls in Gymnasium Suits’ brings to mind images of youthful people, doing their exercises, playing with and enjoying each other on a physical level. The ‘Boys and Girls’ learn how to interact with each other in the ‘School Grounds’. There is the sense that they are having fun, regardless of their individual level of fitness. Some will be very good at sports and be the stars in the ‘Gym’ whilst others are there because they want to join in the fun or because they are instructed to be there and have no choice. Many of their relationship lessons are first learn here.

Oracle: This Symbol asks whether you’ve been neglecting your physical well-being of late. Now is a good time to reestablish an affinity with your body and your vitality. Spontaneous enthusiasm and the joy of being truly “alive” and youthful can regenerate, revive and bring about carefree contact with like-minded people. Nourishing the body with good nutrition, being in the outdoors, enjoying the company of others and the competition of sport can enliven everyone’s spirits. Physical exercise is a necessary part of the education of young people’s minds and bodies. Giving youth the opportunity to learn how to play sport and the benefits of the concepts of “fair play” amongst peers leads to a healthy society. However, discipline may need to be brought into this situation. Children picking on others for things such as not being clever physically, or not having a perfect body, etc., should be discouraged as everyone has their own special talents and needs. With this Symbol, there can be a form of “conscription” where one has to wear a uniform when they may not want to.

The Sabian Symbol for the Sun at 16 Cancer is
A MAN STUDYING A MANDALA IN FRONT OF HIM, WITH THE HELP OF A VERY ANCIENT BOOK.

Commentary: The Symbol ‘A Man Studying a Mandala in Front of Him’ shows someone intent on gaining insight and meaning through ‘Study’. He is ‘Studying’ a ‘Mandala’ which may be in the form of a picture, design or structure. This can be anything from an astrology chart, to an architectural drawing to a sacred image, etc. The ‘Mandala’ is often a collection of ideas and possibilities, experiences and lessons, and history and mythology. These things can be presented as a kind of tapestry. He is ‘Studying’ this ‘With the Help of a Very Ancient Book’; it has clues and answers from ages past. Looking to the “secret mysteries” can reveal answers to life’s questions, and how best to proceed.

Oracle: You may be attempting to understand what all these, “secret mysteries”, mentioned above, may mean in the current context, and applying it to the relevance of today. You may be puzzled by the deeper meanings of the subject you’re ‘Studying’ or trying to unravel. Reverting to traditional answers is not always easy in the present day. The key to deciphering these mysteries is in traditional knowledge and wisdom. Adopting a plan or a strategy is a good idea, as is following “the rules of the book”. With devices like the Internet and television, the quicker options are usually chosen. These methods have their merits, but they can be enhanced further when teamed up with the older, more tried and true answers. Perhaps you feel “boxed in” by your situation. You must seek what is already known in order to understand what’s happening. If a plan is adopted, make sure it is based on sound principles and everything should work out. Patience, research and respect for the past are all vital elements here. A teacher is likely to appear. Much will be learnt and revealed.

Systems of thought that are laid out. Maps. The rules of warfare-anything with a strategy. Drawing strength and inspiration from squares and circles. Inward attention. Mandalas.

The Caution: Ignoring the old wisdom for modern rational systems. Lack of imagination. Going into a situation unorganized and unplanned. Trying to gain the better of others by out strategizing them. Not wanting to put in the work.
