Significant Planetary Aspects for:

Mercury has just entered his home sign of Gemini and is already preparing to back out of it. Stationed since Sunday, he goes retrograde after midnight EDT on Thursday and leaves Gemini on Wednesday of next week. It’s as if the cosmic messenger darted in to enjoy a brief moment of flight before returning to the focused, slow and steady turf of Taurus. This phenomenon of coming up for air and going back down to earth is happening with three of the year’s four Mercury, retreating from Aquarius to Capricorn in January, Gemini to Taurus now, and Libra to Virgo in September. (The fourth, which starts at Christmas and goes into January 2010, takes place entirely in the earth sign Capricorn.) It’s the mental equivalent of shaking your hands out partway through a test so they’ll be more limber when you return to the task, or looking up from the page and blinking to revive your eyes during a reading marathon.

As Mercury revisits the territory he has traveled since April 22, you’ll have fresh vision and may well catch details and practicalities that slipped by before. You may also find yourself wondering, “Didn’t we just do this?” Since this retrograde takes Mercury back to a sign ruled by Venus, this stretch of time will have faint echoes of her recent retrograde, heavy on the monetary end. People from the past often resurface during a Mercury retrograde, and the folks who show up now are likely to present unfinished financial or relationship business. (No coincidence that a movie called “Ghosts of Girlfriends Past” is now in general release.) Your system of values is very different now, refined as it is by Venus’ three squares to Pluto, so use the ghosts as barometers of your personal evolution – and reminders of areas that could benefit from some tidying up. Also, as Mercury returns to Venus-ruled territory, be especially cautious about making major outlays of cash. If a big-ticket purchase becomes necessary now (life does go on during a retrograde), research it thoroughly.

Remember the usual Mercury retrograde guidelines: Finish old business. Research and investigate. Organize and file. Allow extra time for travel. Double and triple-check communications, because the potential is higher for delays, confusion, misunderstandings and things otherwise not being as they seem. Mercury will be retrograde until May 30 and will not clear the retrograde shadow until mid-June.

As Mercury moves toward his retrograde, we also spend the week in the build-up to Saturday’s Scorpio Full Moon. This is the most intense sign for a Full Moon, since the emotions that peak in its light run to the powerful and deep-rooted. The Sun and the Moon each have important pre-game and post-game events that color the action and tip it to our ultimate benefit.

The Moon joins with Saturn on Monday, then opposes Uranus and triggers more personalizing and internalizing of the ongoing Saturn/Uranus opposition. Watch for a moment of committing to your own emotional and security needs, followed by breaking out of a thought pattern or situation that has constrained and not supported you. We are laying tracks for the future and dismantling old ones that lead to destinations that are no longer appealing or appropriate.

The Sun trines Saturn on Tuesday. The ego is on board with what our emotions did yesterday; it’s easy and natural to shoulder responsibility, especially to the self. Remember that if you encounter a conflict between your needs and desires and those of other people as the day goes on. (The Moon opposes Venus, the Sun’s ruler now and in the coming Full Moon, mid-afternoon; she opposes Mars soon after midnight EDT). There is a balance point between the two extremes. If you’re taking care of yourself first (healthy choices, remember), you will find it.

The Moon sextiles her own ruler, Pluto, early evening on Thursday and opens the door to an intensified emotional experience, with the potential of banishing distractions and zeroing in on what is most important. Early Friday morning, the Sun and the Moon each get pre-show jitters, the Sun from Pluto and the Moon from Uranus. Our egos are leery of giving up control, while our emotional centers dread leaving the comfort of the familiar. Transformation and change are inevitable from both encounters, though. Instead of resisting and prolonging the experience, if you find yourself balking, quivering or anxious, look within for the source of the agitation. Stabilization comes by late afternoon, when the Moon makes an opportunity aspect to Saturn and gives the chance to take constructive action, likely involving being responsible to yourself.

The Full Moon takes place an hour after midnight EDT. It’s on the Taurus/Scorpio axis, which is ruled by Venus and Pluto – on one end, the planet whose desires and system of values have been freshly pared back and refocused and on the other, the planet that executed the paring and focusing. The axis spans individual and joint resources, what you can create and earn on your own and what you do with others, how you support yourself and how you share, financially, sexually and energetically, with others. Watch for evidence of what you are creating for yourself and with others. Measure it against your newly honed value system, and be fearless in making your own personal cut-backs. They will pay off, at least emotionally, as the Full Moon winds down. The Moon’s trine to Uranus Saturday morning unleashes fresh air and the exhilaration of new possibilities; the Sun’s contraparallel to Pluto Saturday evening points out where you are doggedly clinging (and might do better to let go).

The only two aspects on Sunday tie a tidy bow on the Full Moon experience. Write down your dreams on waking. The Moon makes a growth aspect to Pluto overnight that heightens emotional de-cluttering and focus. There’s no sense of deprivation; instead, we live a demonstration of “less is more.” When she trines Venus early afternoon, what remains is choice and exactly what we want.
