Mercury and everything he rules — communication, papers, short-term learning, transportation, short-distance travel and siblings — dominate the week. Mercury is the planet making the most nonlunar aspects (Venus comes second). The week begins with him already in the shadow of his upcoming retrograde, and the week ends with the beginning of his retrograde, on Sunday. And he rules the Sun, in Friday’s Full Moon, which is also the day he pulls into his station. So be prepared for thinking, rethinking, messages galore, strategizing, running around and mind expansion — any and all of which will likely come back again as Mercury crosses this territory again during his retrograde and on his way out.
The retrograde begins Sunday, September 6 and lasts until September 29. (Yes, another long one.) This one will take Mercury back to the degree that marked the end of Saturn’s retrograde this spring, 21 Virgo, which Saturn occupied all May. This recurrence is no coincidence. It’s the sort of repetition that an effective speaker or teacher uses: say what you’re going to say, say it, and say what you said. The skies are making sure that we get the message that Saturn in Virgo has been broadcasting for the past two years: Take care of yourself, get your own house in order and leave other people’s business to them. Mercury crossed this point on August 17, so the weeks since then will be included in the review period as well. That means this review will also involve issues of implementing the choices we made during the summer’s eclipses. Expect to revisit the initial conversations, strategies and schemes we have launched or entertained for unraveling the situations we’re leaving and putting new ones into play.
As he moves towards his retrograde, Mercury makes significant contacts that prepare him, to Saturn, Jupiter and Mars, then the Moon and Sun. The first, on Monday, provides perspective on our Saturn work and personal responsibility and groundwork lessons. The clarity may come in disguise. If you experience heaviness or delays or burdens, or encounter ramifications, consequences or a nay-saying from authority, take a look at how well you are (or aren’t) taking care of yourself. Perspective leads to moving puzzle pieces around. Talk, thoughts and messages are both agitated and agitating on Tuesday. The workout sets mental issues in motion; by Thursday, they lunge forward and breakouts and breakthroughs abound. Again, these may come in disguise, arguments and conflicts being the likeliest. Idle talk won’t suffice; we’ll want action, progress, movement, pushing our agendas and ambitions forward and, to use an idiom, walking our talk — and pressuring other people to do the same. By Sunday, more perspective and clarity will be at our disposal. Keep them at hand as Mercury travels through his retrograde. We go into this one with more than a glimpse of what the retrograde will revisit.
A reminder about navigating a Mercury retrograde: Ignore doom and gloom pronouncements. Some people act like the sky is falling when a Mercury retrograde approaches, but ignore doom and gloom pronouncements. It’s not a disaster in the making. It’s simply a time when paying attention is more prudent than usual. Avoid launching new ventures, projects and businesses; put off signing contracts, loans and major papers if at all possible (especially since Mercury starts this retrograde in Libra, which rules contracts and agreements). And if practicalities won’t let you, take very, very close looks before signing and know that there is a high probability that some part of the deal will be up for change or renegotiation later. When Mercury is retrograde, it’s common for each side to go into a situation with a different set of assumptions (which look to be the same), or with a mistake or misunderstanding. Use this time proactively to dig deeper, review, revisit, reexamine, reorganize, investigate, file and clean up. Since second looks are always suited to a Mercury retrograde, use this time to go back over your progress in personal organization and mastery since May. Your attention will likely be directed to it, even if you don’t consciously put it there.
Some of these issues will come up under the Pisces Full Moon, which is the other main astro-event of the week, on Friday. This Moon is on the Virgo/Pisces axis, which explores the gamut that runs from mentally separating, analyzing and perfecting to dissolving the ego’s boundaries. Much as Monday brought us mental perspective, the Pisces Full Moon provides emotional perspective on our self-mastery. This Moon lights up how well we remain intact in ourselves when immersed in the interconnectedness of all being. Watch for issues to arise of codependency and taking on (or being overwhelmed by) other people’s problems and energy. If you feel your own emotions cresting, step back and ask — is the situation that’s triggering this really my problem? Really? Step back from the emotions and entanglement. The portion that belongs to you (if there is any) will stand out in sharp contrast. Claim it and leave the rest wherever it is. Leave it. This does not mean that you’re cold-hearted. It means that you are not interfering with the right of the other people involved to make their own decisions and determine their own lives. Affording people that level of respect is an act of compassion, which exists at the Pisces end of this Full Moon. Assist if asked, and if your heart tells you to, but do not act without permission — and do not act to your own injury. Service, yes; sacrifice, no. If you’re still unclear or uncomfortable, turn the tables. How would you feel if someone jumped into your business and handled it? Monday: Important messages abound today. You might have to dig through them to hit the mother lode, which is feedback on your self-mastery. Target the beginning of the day for productivity and time-critical tasks. The bulk of the day belongs to floating and what will feel like aimlessness, since the Moon is void of course from 2:09 PM EDT to just before midnight. This void isn’t so aimless in its undercurrents, though. It’s tailor made for processing, assimilating and trying on the new. Like so many voids lately, it kicks off with an aspect to enlightening, liberating Uranus. Whatever new opportunity or fresh air rushes in early afternoon, we’ll have the whole rest of the day to try it on for size.
Tuesday: Mercury and Jupiter mix it up. More messages, communication, thoughts flying and flying. What’s intended to be a simple conversation can quickly escalate. Don’t clamp down the talk or mental activity. The more excited it gets, the bigger the vision or underlying concept can grow.
Wednesday: It’s Mars’ turn to mix it up with Jupiter. Excitement, energy, aggression, once any of these gets started it will churn and mushroom. Use the vibe to maximize your effort; sidestep arguments and battles, if you can, and look for the silver lining if you can’t. (And if you can’t see that lining now, you’ll get another chance later as Mercury visits this territory two more times.) Matters of the heart and bank account are likely topics of disagreement.
Thursday: By night time, it will feel like the Full Moon is already well underway. The atmosphere is fractious. Nothing is comfortable in its skin (not situations, not people); everything is stirring and moving and arguing and shifting. It’s another day to take special, extra, over the top precautions while driving or otherwise traveling from one place to another. Road rage, lover’s spats and jealousy (with cause or not) will be epidemic in some parts of our galaxy.
Friday: Mercury slows into his retrograde station. The Full Moon dominates the morning. How can you honor yourself and interact compassionately with others? That’s the balance point to find. Healthy choices for yourself lead to a feeling of exhilaration and new possibilities.
Saturday: The Moon opposes Saturn late morning and we get a another good hard look at boundaries, obligations and commitments. Are you taking care of yourself? Is your heart being fed? Commit to your own nourishment. If you look for it outside yourself, you’ll be disappointed. If you find it within yourself, others will reflect it back to you.
Sunday: The Moon and the Sun both face down Mercury. Today’s good hard look is at communication. Messages reveal much about the state of our heart and our sense of purpose. As the weekend winds down, Mercury formally begins his retrograde. Everything we’ve thought about, discussed and tested this week will come back around for a second look now, and again in early October.
