Relationship lab is officially beginning. This week Saturn puts aside the self-mastery lessons of Virgo and moves into Libra, where each of us will confront the Self through the Other. He’ll duck back into Virgo for a brush-off from April to July next year, but otherwise it’s all relationships, all the time, until October 2012. We’re moving from lessons in taking responsibility for ourselves to lessons in taking responsibility for how we interact with others.

Responsibility issues in some arena of life come up every time Saturn changes sign. It’s one of his key themes. When Saturn moves into a new part of your chart, you are called upon to act responsibly in and ultimately commit to the affected area of your life. No matter what house is being activated in your chart, relationships are going to be the vehicle for the responsibility and commitment lessons. These lessons often take the form, at first, of weightiness, constrictions and restrictions in the areas of life associated with Saturn’s new terrain. This does not have to be the case, so please do not worry yourself into them. Many people, particularly those who have tended to their Saturn in Virgo personal mastery and boundaries issues, will not experience the transit that way. If you haven’t been acting responsibly or have been misusing your authority in that area, however, ramifications will start to appear. (Libra rules justice, so contractual or legal issues could crop up.) Existing agreements are going to undergo stress tests, which will especially light up exchanges that are out of balance or not in keeping with one side’s highest interests. For some people, this shift will bring distance and separations in relationships — forcing the ending of unworkable or outmoded ones and testing the structure and commitment in others. For some people, this shift will usher in a serious attitude about relationships and a desire for long-term arrangements (the direction, I think, this transit will take all of us eventually).

This sign change is going to be more intense than Saturn’s norm. We’ve been feeling early warning signs of this shift for the past couple of weeks, as Saturn has been moving into an action-demanding square with Pluto, which will be exact in the middle of next month. Permanent changes and transformations are in process. Old attitudes are being cut away. Watch for more and more displays of backbone, of David vs. Goliath moments, of people drawing lines or standing up for themselves and refusing to back down when their bottom line and personal integrity are at stake.

Saturn and Mercury have a relationship during this shift that’s worth mentioning. Saturn has been in a sign ruled by Mercury. Mercury has been in the sign to which Saturn is heading, Libra. The day before Saturn leaves Virgo for Libra, Mercury leaves Libra for Scorpio, which is ruled by Pluto, who is currently in Saturn’s home of Capricorn. Confused? The connections will become crystal (and perhaps startlingly) clear. Mercury immediately makes an opportunity aspect to Pluto, with whom Saturn is building up tension. Mercury gains handy superpowers in Scorpio, like X-ray vision and mind-reading, and his bag of trick swells with tools and devices like wiretaps and spyglasses that can peer around corners and into hiding places. All of these will kick in on Wednesday, when communications zoom in on the personal empowerment and structural renovation that Saturn and Pluto are forcing. David has the opportunity to speak up to Goliath. Secrets are spilled. Profound and meaningful information is shared. This aspect encourages speaking the unvarnished truth, so the niceties that Mercury has enjoyed in Libra will jumpshift into stark honesty, perhaps brutally so.

The first platform for that honesty is in your own thinking. Prepare to uncover what you really think about money and primal issues of power, and then to communicate them. Do not be surprised if amputations occur, and not necessarily where you would predict as you read this. Cutting loose of an attitude may be what’s called for. On the other hand, cutting loose of a situation may happen, too, organically and deftly. When your thoughts crystallize, cuts will be swift and clean. We will emerge from this with our minds decluttered, and probably much of our lives as well. So banish fears and strap on courage. Engage your inner vision and hearing. Above all, stand in your own truth and integrity. That’s part of acting responsibly.

Monday: Emotions could fly all over the map if you let them. Understand that this is going on for everyone and in every encounter focus on what you have in common. The only major aspect of the day is a lovely flow between the Moon and Venus in the evening. Open your heart, show gratitude and appreciation and act with kindness. You will receive all of that in return.

Tuesday: Happy, escapist dreams provide a soft launch into the day. Float on them to maintain a helpful go-with-the-flow approach. Don’t cling stubbornly to your agenda (schedule or attitudinal) as afternoon rolls around. If you listen to your heart and guidance instead, you’ll see a benefit in being flexible. Speaking of guidance, the channels are open and flowing. Immersing yourself in higher love takes all the rough edges off reality, at least for the day. Act on inspiration.

Wednesday: If you wake up less than rested, it’s because your mind was working so much out during the night. You may even have the vague echo of having had a conversation with someone. Don’t discount the possibility that you were communicating on other levels. Even if you don’t feel or believe this, groundwork was laid for later in the day. This involved a three-step process overnight. Your heart and mind got into sync, your mind lined up and organized both sides of an equation (probably involving another person) and then your thoughts dove into the depths of perception. All this will come into play as the day goes on and it brings one after the other of those conversations you’ve been putting off. Even though Mercury is now in fiercely penetrating Scorpio, conversational graces are still at our disposal. A trine between Venus and Jupiter insures good will, receptive hearts and ears and interactions that are generally happy and assuming the best. A few simple, artfully chosen words will speak volumes. Messages that might otherwise come across as harsh or difficult will go over more easily today. especially if they’re cloaked in kindness, consideration and niceties. But don’t be fooled by pretty trappings. Listen carefully to what’s being said. Major truths are coming out.

Thursday: More restlessness is on tap overnight. The Sun and Mars are in a shoving match, so your dreams are expressing the frustration and aggravations that could otherwise be disrupting your waking world. Instead, they’re shaking up your psyche and lighting a fire in you. Take note of the call to action that’s sounding in your head as you awaken. If what you’re spurred to do involves another person, Saturn’s mid-day move to Libra will delay or soft pedal combativeness (or set consequences in motion if that does surface). Emotions are quiet but fluid throughout the day, with much going on beneath the surface.

Friday: The night gets off to a rough start. Yesterday’s subsurface activities lead to insights or outbursts erupting in the first hour of the day EDT. The detonation could be powerful enough to wake you up. If it doesn’t, pay attention to your dream fragments come morning. If it does, think it through; it won’t keep you up long. Going back to sleep and waking rested are probable, because Neptune will bring dreams that soothe, if not necessarily make sense. His influence colors the day, too, as he and the Sun meet on the ecliptic. The day is better suited to acting on inspiration and intuition than to following a strict schedule. In fact, strict schedules won’t work at all. Push hard and you will get wrong turns and acts of mental confusion, which land you exactly where you didn’t know you need to be.

Saturday: Happy Halloween! The monsters are out early this holiday, as yet another less-than-peaceful night is on tap. It goes from motivating to frazzling to vaguely unsettling, hardly a recipe for deep sleep. (Pay attention to memories of your dreams; they will point to matters you’re working out, or want to address.) Fortunately, the cobwebs and spooks do not linger past daybreak. If you can afford the time, sleep in and make up for the rejuvenation the night didn’t bring. If you can’t, hold your tongue and keep in mind that everyone else was rattled during the night, too. Everyone will be better disposed to each other after nightfall, when a warm-hearted party vibe builds. Be forewarned: the Moon’s harmonious link to Jupiter will justify breaking into any Halloween candy that happens to be about.

Sunday: After a string of disrupted nights, the skies treat us to a gentle day. Kicking off with a sextile to Neptune, the Moon is void of course for almost 12 hours, from 9:29 AM to 8:45 PM EDT. Treat yourself to an old-fashioned day of rest. Let your life go fallow. Lie about, go to church if that’s your nature, read the paper, snooze, watch TV or movies and declare a time-out from confrontations and harsh topics. Right after the void there’ll be impetus aplenty to force issues. Recharge beforehand and regain balance, so that your words and actions this evening are not reactive.
