The pot is getting stirred this week. Layers of texture and complexity are coming into the atmosphere, as three bodies change signs and move the expression of their energies into very different modes. At the same time, tension that’s been with us for the last 18 months is building to yet another point of release. It’s a jumble of energizing, shifting, grounding, darting, flirting, cavorting and watching teetering structures collapse with less of an impulse to shore them up. We’ll be gathering with pals, chattering away, sipping drinks and clinking glasses as the old clears out of our landscapes — with a faint air of ancient sorrows and longing rising up from the dust.
The changes begin on Monday, when the Sun enters Taurus and Chiron moves into Pisces. The first isn’t dramatic or earth-shaking, but is business as usual for this time of the year. The second is a bigger change, because it happens much less frequently.
The Sun’s visit to Taurus calms the burst of go-get-‘em Aries energy we’ve just undergone and invites us to slow down a bit, root ourselves in the physicality of our lives and experience it moment by moment. The transit always makes me think of Munro Leaf’s Story of Ferdinand, the bull who did not run and jump and butt heads like all the other bulls, but liked to sit quietly and smell the flowers. We’ve got extra reason this year to follow his lead. The Sun is coasting into this slower mode just as another influence is encouraging exactly the same approach. Mercury, the planet of communication and transportation, is now retrograde in the sign of Taurus, slowing (and sometimes impeding) the pace of mental and physical movement and requiring second, third and fourth looks at all manner of practicalities. As always, there will be quirks, surprises, confusion, unmasking and reworking of information, messages, conversations, plans and travels. This time around they are hardly theoretical or conceptual, but are especially affecting or involving mundane, concrete, physical and financial aspects of existence. (My Astro-Insight blog has a discussion of this retrograde’s particularly earthbound nature.) Slow and steady is the way to go. Look at what’s in front of you. Take it in with however many physical senses are appropriate, then chew on it with your mind. No gulping; chew slowly and allow your intake ample time to digest. Pay special attention to the old business that resurfaces, too. Reprocess it now and stabilize it, so your footing will be all the more sure when you leap into action as the summer begins.
The Taurean immersion in the physical is working in tandem, and in harmony, with Chiron’s move into Pisces. In mythology, Chiron is the centaur who traded his immortality for relief from a wound that would not heal. Symbolically, he represents the both our individual and collective abiding wounds and the healing and mastery that come from accepting and assimilating them and embracing their gifts. Chiron’s shift from Aquarius to Pisces is not as abrupt as the Sun’s move from Aries to Taurus. Piscean overtones have been seeping into our Chiron issues over the last year or so, as the dwarf planet has been traveling with Neptune, the ruler of Pisces. Now that Chiron has crossed into the sign, he will stir the Piscean waters directly. Ancient pains, sorrows, disillusionments and deceits will swirl about. Some will be ours and some will be others’ that we confuse with our own, and they will be heavy on sacrifice, pity and the illusion of separation from each other and from God. Gradually these will give way to the healing that comes from forgiveness, compassion and awareness of the interconnectedness of all life. These are huge goals, so it’s fitting that the process will not be quick. These stirrings will be with us for almost the entire decade, since Chiron will not clear Pisces until 2019.
For now, the link between the Sun in Taurus and Chiron in Pisces settles us comfortably into our bodies, the physicality of existence and this moment in this dot on the time/space continuum. Take advantage of clear skies, mild temperatures and the riot of colors and aromas in the plant world. Immerse yourself in the here and now.
On Sunday, Venus leaves her comfy, earthy, sensual home of Taurus and enters flirty, high-flying Gemini, where she’ll stay till the 20th of May. This sign may not provide the creature comforts she so dearly loves, but it gives her the social contact she enjoys, with a variety of admirers that flatters her and many, many opportunities to talk and gather information about her pet subjects — love, money, baubles, beauty and, of course, her own worth. She’s got a special relationship with words right now, since she and Mercury, the planet of communication, are house-sitting for each other. As she’s letting herself into his door, he’s scuffling with her consort Mars — a scenario that will ignite sparking and flirting and desires-to-demands for interpersonal contact.
Some of the talk (and more) will likely reflect the big event that’s coming to a head as next week starts: the fourth, and next-to-last, pass of the Saturn/Uranus opposition. This event is neither new nor unexpected, though some of the details may play out unexpectedly. Since the fall of 2008, we have each been undergoing a revolution in how our lives operate, with erratic, chaotic and insight-provoking developments in one area challenging, destabilizing and ultimately forcing restructuring in another area. (For a refresher, watch my animated video about the opposition.) This particular round has been rumbling since the first week of the month, when Saturn retrograded back into Virgo. Next Monday’s opposition is the last one that will take place on the Virgo/Pisces axis. It is part of the final wrapping up of issues from September 2007 – October 2009, which we will be cleaning up until Saturn goes direct at the end of May. It is the final testing of the lessons in boundaries, intactness and personal well-being we underwent during that earlier time span, as well as the last challenge to habits, ingrained programming, limiting or burdensome concepts of service and other patterns that have outgrown their usefulness and appropriateness for our lives. Details are not annoyances now. They are fundamentally important. God is in them.
Monday: Choices in maturity, responsibility and commitment are on tap. What propels them is not so much coming to a crossroads, but coming up against a brick wall or two. Look long and hard in each direction. Which way expresses commitment to your self and your mission? Taking your time thinking about it is permissible; in fact, it may be hard to avoid. Our minds are gnawing on thoughts as if they were bones. Find some distance to spot traps and invitations to power games before they snare you. The Sun’s entering Taurus today, too, so there’s no need to rush into anything.
Tuesday: Choices There’s little in the sky today to distract from the building tension of the fourth opposition between Saturn and Uranus coming next Monday. There are no aspects whatsoever during the daylight hours in the Western Hemisphere. The only one in the evening takes the edge off the tension, brightens the mood and reminds us of how and where we are lucky. No matter how unstable some parts of life may be, there are aspects that feed your heart. Bask in them. It wouldn’t hurt to return the favor, and to say thank you.
Wednesday: Choices Yesterday’s emotional nourishment continued on in the dreamtime, which blossomed with pleasing scenarios and expressions of love. The good vibes feed our hearts as we start the day. Before they fade take note of who you were visiting overnight and then observe how your attitudes and interactions follow in the waking world. The morning has a short mood void (10:08 AM – 11:43 AM EDT), which could be more focused and serious than the norm, since it starts with an opportunity aspect to Saturn. Still, put off implementing all the practical ideas and plans that come to you until the afternoon. Let the edginess of the day’s second half propel you into productivity, with your lookout still on alert for traps and power games.
Thursday: Choices Skittishness abounds in the waking hours, as if to prevent us from blinding ourselves or ignoring the rumbling and groaning of the upcoming opposition. Do not allow someone to trick or talk you out of your perceptions as the night grows, when a Sun/Neptune contact clouds the air. It will be hard enough to you to maintain a grip on your own priorities and perspective without letting another person add to the murkiness. This is not a night to think about, work on or negotiate practicalities and finances, so if those are involved in the structures collapsing in your world, put off the inquiries and discussions. Connecting with guides or muses, however, is another matter, and so is romance. Venus and Mars are having a late-night tryst (after midnight EDT, before elsewhere in the country) that echoes their most recent union in the middle degrees of Taurus last June. Attractions and desires may heat up intensely. It may well feel as if your male and female sides (or you and another person) are operating with the same set of assumptions and immediate goals. Just remember: everything may not be as it seems.
Friday: Choices Yesterday’s mists of inspiration, romance and illusion continue, with more of the same in vaguely unsettling undercurrents as well. A short-ish moon void scuttles prospects for consistent progress during the work day, stalling it with reverie and fantasizing from 11:36 AM to 2:25 PM EDT. The planets of earthly and higher love dominate the afternoon, with Venus making a hard aspect to Neptune. Enjoy the dreaminess but no committing to anyone or anything just yet (and no big cash outlays, either, please). A sharper light or lens is necessary to perceive whether that glamorous vision before you is a holograph, a projection of your own anima or animus or a real person whose substance matches their appearance. Clarity may come as early as late night. Ask for it.
Saturday: Choices If clarity didn’t come last night, or you didn’t dare trust the answer that hit you, think about your dreams — or simply pay attention to how your body feels when you think about the situation. Venus and Saturn conferred in the dream world and passed judgment on yesterday’s developments. They’ve grounded and calmed you, and on some deep level you have committed, one way or another. Whatever your perceptions are this morning, trust them. And if what you have embraced is not yet a part of your normal environment (for example, a relationship with one of you still untangling from a prior one), be prepared for feeling out of sorts with it throughout the day.
Sunday: Choices Saturday evening get-togethers are likely to spill into the early, early morning, with Venus moving into Gemini and keeping conversations sparkling and fun and flirty. She’ll be keeping minds active all night, too, and so will Mercury head-butting Mars, none of which will allow for deep and restful sleep for those of us who do try for it. Tread softly in the morning, for your own sake and others’. Mind your own business, keep your own counsel and don’t take personal offense at what the people around you say. No one is firing on all cylinders. Focus on what’s most important to you and ignore the small stuff. There will be plenty of it, discomfiting, annoying and frustrating, throughout the afternoon. We’re all getting clearer on how we feel about the structures that are rattling and collapsing around us. Get out of the way of falling debris. Let your heart lead and you’ll be in the right place at the right time (and with the right person) late afternoon.
