The last few weeks have certainly been full of doorways. They’ve been popping up and open in front of us multiple times daily, even if some have taken less than welcome forms. All have been propelling us more and more onto new paths and into new ways of thinking and being. This week, the changes become more personal and closer to home, and we start closing doors behind us.
Focus turns this week to the home and family waters of Cancer. They quickly go from the subject of thinking and talking about them to the source of waves of emotional outpourings, under the partial lunar eclipse that is the Capricorn Full Moon. Thanks to the experiences of the first half of the week, we’ll enter the flood zone with a good and conscious understanding of situations already in place. As new data pours in (which will be emotional and/or historic) to flesh out the pictures, rational reactions will give way to primal forces. Inner children will be on the rampage, clutching at Mommy, pacifiers and security blankets or their not-so-camouflaged grown-up equivalents, but those impulses are mature compared to what’s really calling the shots. Instincts will be in control that took root in our cells before we were capable of conscious thought, which means that a lot of reactions aren’t going to make sense even to the person having it. We’ll be hypersensitive, perceiving slights where no offense was intended and, at the other extreme, finding cause in simple actions to hug each other in one big gloopy love fest. We’ll tear up at reminders of days and people long gone (listen to oldies stations at your own risk; school and family reunions will use up mountains of Kleenex). Waves will crest and crash, and as they recede, a lot of our past — and especially our attachment to it — will wash away with them. We’ll come out of the week with our emotional allegiances sharply redefined, almost as if purified. In fact, they will be exactly that: purified.
This surfin’ safari starts with the Sun and Mercury, two major components of our masculine side, entering Cancer and quickly stirring matters up with all the cosmic change agents. The Sun is our basic personality and mission, while Mercury rules our mental processes (information intake, processing and outflow) and how we move around. Our selves, our thoughts and our communications are more emotionally expressive here. We’re more focused on nurturing, nesting, tradition and long-term security, whether emotional or financial. People are more inclined to fuss and cluck over each other, to express and operate on the basis of tribal allegiances and affiliations, and to gravitate to soft, warm, gushy sentiments and food. Lots of food. The Sun’s entrance into Cancer happens on Monday, while Mercury follows on Friday. The Sun’s move ushers in both summer (it’s the solstice) and the first of the grand crosses that will ultimately involve the beginnings of all four cardinal signs over the course of the summer. For now, only (only!) three legs of the cross are in self-motivating, action-oriented, ground-breaking cardinal energy, with Saturn still in flexible, earthy, mutable Virgo.
As this week’s grand cross settles in, the Sun and Mercury have confrontations with Uranus, Jupiter and Pluto, which start the releasing and purifying process that’ll escalate over the weekend. (Mercury has a dust-up with Saturn on his way into this gauntlet, interjecting messages about commitments, responsibilities and authority midway into the process.) The run-ins with Uranus and Jupiter are volcanic, steamy, passionate-to-angry encounters that blast us into new perspectives and out of old paradigm situations, and compel us to act on our own security and emotional needs, suddenly, unapologetically and courageously. (Taking up arms is one apt metaphor, which may, alas, play out literally as well.) Messages, information and conversations shake and rattle us, some of us to the core.
The showdowns with Pluto challenge us drop baggage and attachments and admit that enough is enough. After the workover are Uranus and Jupiter doing, letting go may be relatively easy and effortless. We’ll already have been startled into loosening our grip and baggage and more may well have already fallen from our hands by the time Pluto steps in. The new approaches, perspectives and information that we have already embraced will inform our actions and reactions as well. We will have intellectually reached a point of readiness for change. Our priorities and bottom line for security should be crystal clear as we sail toward the weekend’s lunar eclipse. Pluto’s laser beam will trace the lines that we need to cut.
And there will be cutting. Who we call family and what we call home, personally and publicly. are ongoing themes of the current Cancer/Capricorn eclipse cycle, which revved up again last July. Home, career and security issues are now heating up again that have been on the back burner since mid-January’s Capricorn New Moon solar eclipse. What bubbles up now (or, more likely, boils over) is an outgrowth of intentions we launched at the Capricorn New Moon solar eclipse this past January. It also has a parallel, if not a direct connection, to matters in these areas that occurred around the Capricorn solar eclipse of December 25, 2000 and the Capricorn lunar eclipse of June 24, 2002. The expansive light of the eclipse will reveal emotions and activity that have been occurring in the shadows. Because the Moon is standing with Pluto, not a comfortable distance away, but right next to him at that, some of these revelations may stir or embody our deepest fears. Some may stir or embody our deepest desires and cravings, particularly ones that we have not wanted to admit or expose to the light of day or public scrutiny. The Sun and Mercury will be across the room from this pairing, close to to the South Node in Cancer, triggering all manner of communication and running around — whisperings, gossip, stalking by Google search, pouring through old letters and yearbooks, trading memories with old pals and school friends, tracking down (and consuming) comfort and snack foods associated with childhood and other earlier, happier days, some of which will drip with revelations as well.
We will not simply gaze upon the revelations with wonder. A lot of what we see and a lot of what we hear will make us realize that we are done with it — and sharp, shocked and shocking action will ensue. In some cases we’ll be on the receiving end and probably a bit stunned; in others, we’ll be the one wielding the scalpel. Don’t worry about this in advance. Cuts will be swift, clean and largely unexpected or unpremeditated. Uranus and Jupiter are at the midpoint of this Full Moon and bearing the brunt of the pressure coming off the opposition. Their teamwork is incendiary, explosive and motivating. Whatever happens, we will not be lying around moaning in a fetal position (even with the influences in Cancer). We will honor the call to action and get going. The ground rules for response are not anything new, either. They should be second nature by now, courtesy of Saturn in Virgo. We will make choices and set boundaries that are healthy for us individually, first and foremost. It doesn’t matter how bonded a person is to us, whether s/he’s an older relative, chosen-family member or a longtime friend. If we encounter abusive, judgmental or demeaning treatment now, the most loving choice we could make will be to cut that person out, particularly if it’s a repeat offense, No one is entitled to stay in our lives simply because of shared history or blood. Monday: Happy solstice! Today is the longest day of the year, and much of it is going to be spent talk, talk, talking. Let your mind, mouth and feet run free. You’ll pick up, chew on and pass around all manner of interesting information, some of which will factor into the mental framework with which you’ll meet the eclipse and its revelations. The day opens up your view of yourself and where you’re going in some significant way. Your internal definitions are being updated, to reflect the new stage that you’ve reached. If you aren’t quite ready to drop a certain label or attitude, another push to do so will come by Friday.
Tuesday: This is a day when new skins don’t sit comfortably yet. We’re itching and squirming and squiggling this way and that, but nothing we manage to do today is likely to bring lasting relief. Allow the process — and remember that everyone else is in the midst of this, too.
Wednesday: The overnight hours deliver a major clue about shortcomings in existing arrangements, so pay attention to whatever’s rumbling through your head on awakening. There’s a disconnect between what you’re getting and what you want or value. Ponder the possibilities during the morning’s void Moon, which lasts from before noon till a little after 2 EDT. Go for what you want; the skies are pushing for self-expansion (and indulgence). No languishing in a corner or a safe little box. Push your horizons. Take up a little more space. Whatever you choose to do today, make it bigger, bolder, grander, more dazzlingly you.
Thursday: It’s another day for gathering, processing and spreading information. Today’s messages include some you might now welcome. If you hit a wall, hear a “no,” encounter criticism or feel invalidated, don’t sit and pout. Consider what you might have done to open the door to this, or what you might have not read accurately earlier. Then consider what the message might be pointing to in the bigger picture. It’s a call to action, in some way — an exit sign, a less than gentle nudge to speak up, a cue to rethink…but not to wallow.
Friday: It’s an active day, paving the way for tomorrow’s lunar eclipse. Mercury moves into Cancer and hits Uranus, the Sun opposes Pluto and Venus has a dust up with Saturn. Startling news arrives. Messages drop in out of the blue. Thinking changes gear rapidly. Comments get taken the wrong way. People you thought you were on good terms with are edgy and even combative, and you may not be able to figure out why. Stand fast in your own power, keep a steely eye on what’s most important to you and pick your battles very selectively. Some people will be out for power games (and blood). Don’t waste your time with them.
Saturday: The Capricorn Full Moon lunar eclipse happens as the day is starting on the East Coast, and will coincide with slumber for many of us across the US. This is another morning to take note of what’s flying around your head as you crawl out of bed. Minds will be very, very active in the overnight hours, so sleep is likely to not be restful, and a lot of people could be out of sorts. Listen to your heart and honor its impulses. They’ll run all over the place, from having a good cry to striking out alone. We’re saying good bye to a lot, and that means revisiting lots of earlier points in time as we do it. Ties that are cut today may not be rejoined; doors that shut may not only lock, but lose their doorknob and keyhole.
Sunday: The revelations and goodbyes of the eclipse are still running high. Look for much needed distance on thorny issues, especially ones you have not been able to walk away from. People continue to be edgy and touchy. If you get hit with grouchiness, it’s likely that it’s displaced and has more to do with someone’s internal process and less with you — though it will turn into being about you if you push. There’s a choice to be made as the day goes on. You may not recognize it as such, because it could be enshrouded by clouds, or smoke and mirrors, or less than clear thinking. If you use maintaining your well being and healthy boundaries as your guideline, you will head in the more beneficial direction, whether you’re conscious of it or not.
