Saturn Square Pluto: Reclaiming Power

By Tom Jacobs, http://tdjacobs.com

Who’s in charge? Who has power?

Who should have power?

What does it take to have it? What does a person have to do to be powerful? What do you have to do?

In your relationships, what is whose job? Who’s supposed to take care of you?

And the follow-up for each of these – why?

Pluto in Capricorn forces the questions, “Who do you think is in charge of you?” (or, if you prefer, “Who’s your daddy?”)

Saturn in Libra forces the questions, “Wait a minute – are you, um, trying to get me to be your daddy?” and “Why is it so hard to get people to meet me my version of halfway?”

The square between them can stir up all sorts of questions about who gets to be in charge of what. With Saturn retrograding now, it’s time for review of your assumptions and habits about how authority works and plays out in your life. How’s your grown-up self working out for you these days? How are your self-care routines doing? Ideally, you see the ways that others are not going to meet your needs as cues to learn to do it yourself.

Ideally, you go deep into your family and other relationships histories to untangle any knots about your beliefs about power and who gets to have it.

Ideally, you take charge of you. You choose to learn to empower yourself because your life is yours. Because you came here to do something worth doing, and the only way to do it is to develop emotional, energetic, physical and mental health by taking care of everything you need.

And yet Pluto for each of us is our soul’s route to empowerment. Perceiving ourselves as separate beings (separate from each other, from Source – or [insert your deity name here]), we try to figure out how to be strong and empowered as human selves, these little apparently inconsequential individuals among many. Along the way, we have tons of empowering experiences and tons of those that leave us feeling thoroughly not empowered. For each of us, our Pluto placement represents this journey.

The Pluto-Saturn square brings up the challenges any of us has over the course of our lives to learn to be empowered. Authority is being squared by power. Your ideas of power must come up during this time. How you respond will determine where you go from here – will you choose to take back all the ways you give your power away to others? Will you opt to deepen into yourself and learn in what ways you’re a powerful, creative, divine being? Taking our power back from others and taking responsibility for ourselves is how you get there.

Even if you’re not sure how to do it, make the decision to do it if that’s what feels right. Once you have that intention, life will conspire to bring you opportunities to learn how to do it. Everything that comes to you following it that seems or smells to be about power will be opportunities to work through any issues it’s time for you to deal with. It will come out in your relationships, your work, your home life – everywhere you exist with people and have to get things done at least some of the time with others.

Trust that what’s coming to you is fuel to help you get where you said you wanted to go. Even if it’s tough, even if it pushes your buttons…even if you think you might tear your hair out to get through it. Keep coming back to your original intention and trust that the process you’re in is the right one.
